There are two ways you can set up the machine to handle incoming calls.
Manual Reception (an external telephone required)
Auto Reception
The reception mode can be switched in [Switch Reception Mode] in [Reception Settings] under [Fax Features]. See Reception Settings.
An external telephone is required to use this machine as a telephone.
(mainly North America)
You can also use the optional handset as an external telephone.
