Stapling Precautions

If the number of pages in a document exceeds the maximum number of pages that can be stapled together, the printer staples the maximum number of pages together, and then staples the rest of the pages separately. To set the printer to not staple automatically if the number of pages in a document exceeds the maximum number that can be stapled, consult your service representative. For the number of sheets that can be stapled together, see Supported Paper for Each Output Tray.

Conditions where stapling will be canceled.

Collate will continue if it is specified with the staple function when:

  • Stapling cannot be performed on the selected paper size or type.

  • Paper sizes that cannot be mixed together are contained in a single job

  • Positions other than those set to stapling are specified

  • There are inconsistencies between the orientation in duplex mode and the staple position.

  • There are inconsistencies between the orientation in letterhead mode and the staple position.

  • Paper is loaded using the bypass tray.

  • Only one page is printed.

  • The setting does not meet collating requirements.

  • The record area for collate overflows during the job.

  • An event occurs that forces the printer to print an error report.

  • A tray specified as [Driver/Command] under [Tray Setting Priority] is selected.

Note

  • When staples have run out and [Auto Continue] is off, an error message will be displayed. Cancel the staple function in the error message to continue printing.

  • If Staple or Shift Collate is selected with an optional finisher installed, the paper will be output to the finisher shift tray irrespective of the setting.

  • When printing on letterhead, stapling may not be at the specified position.

  • When duplex printing is selected, adjust staple positions to the binding orientation.

  • Depending on the application you are using, print settings may not be stored and the printed result may not be as expected.

  • When Staple is specified in the printer driver, make sure [Application Collate] is not selected. The output may not come out as desired. Specify [Printer Collate] when printing the document.

  • When printing restarts after removing jammed paper, the printing position may be different, depending on the location of the jam.

    • If the paper jam occurred in an optional finisher, printing will restart from the top page of the data currently being printed, or from the page where the paper jam occurred.

    • If the paper jam occurred in the printer, printing will restart from the page where the paper jam occurred.
