When You Cannot Make Clear Copies

Problem

Solution

Black or white streaks appear on copies.

The platen plate is dirty.

Clean the original and try copying again.

Be particularly careful when using the following types of original:

  • Hand drawn or drawn on with other forms of pencil or pen, such as a plotter.

  • Film, translucent paper, or other originals that attract static electricity.

  • Very long originals.

Copies appear dirty.

Image density is too high.

Adjust the image density settings. For details about image density settings, see "Adjusting Copy Image Density", Copy/ Document Server.

Copies appear dirty.

Auto Image Density is not selected.

On the control panel, select [Auto Density].

Shadow appears on copies if you use pasted originals.

Image density is too high.

  • Change the orientation of the original.

  • Use clear tape to fix down pasted parts of the original.

Images come off.

There is tool little heat or too much toner applied per paper.

Set the paper thickness level to a thicker setting. For details about setting the paper thickness, see "Tray Paper Settings", Connecting the Machine/System Settings.

The same copy area is dirty whenever making copies.

  • The original that has already been printed is scanned.

  • "Original Type" is set to [Text / Photo], and an original with text and photographs that can hardly be distinguished from each other is loaded.

On the control panel, in [Others], press [Generation Copy], and then begin copying.

A light copy may result when you use damp or rough grain paper.

  • Use paper that has been stored in the recommended temperature and humidity conditions. For details about how to store paper, see "Paper Storage", Paper Specifications and Adding Paper.

Copies are too light.

The developing ability has been decreased.

Avoid places that are close to machines generating ammonia.

Toner fusing is poor.

The paper thickness is not properly set.

Parts of images are not copied

The original is not set correctly.

Set originals correctly. For details about how to set originals, see "Placing Originals", Paper Specifications and Adding Paper.

The correct paper size is not selected.

Select the correct paper size.

Images appear only partially.

The paper is damp.

Use paper that has been stored in the recommended temperature and humidity conditions. For details about how to store it, see "Paper Storage", Paper Specifications and Adding Paper.

Image density is uneven.

The original has areas of solid color, or [Positive/Negative] is selected when copying multiple sheets.

When using Repeat Copy with originals that have areas of solid color, set the number of originals as follows: A0 - A2 (E - C): 1 sheet, A3 (B) or smaller: 3 sheets. For details about sizes of originals, see "Measure Chart", Copy/Document Server Reference.

Image density is uneven.

Halftone originals can cause this problem.

Try using "Text / Photo".

Images are blurred when using translucent paper.

Translucent paper is being used when copying multiple sheets.

Select a proper paper thickness for the copy paper. For details about setting the paper thickness, see "Tray Paper Settings", Connecting the Machine/System Settings.

Extreme wrinkling occurs when using translucent paper.

An improper paper thickness is selected.

Select a proper paper thickness for the copy paper. For details about setting the paper thickness, see "Tray Paper Settings", Connecting the Machine/System Settings.

Strong wrinkles appear when using translucent paper.

The paper type has recently been changed from plain paper to translucent paper.

Wait about one minute.

Black lines appear.

White lines appear.

The platen plate is dirty.

A moire pattern is produced on copies.

The original has a dot pattern image or many lines.

Place the original at a slight angle.

Wrinkles appear on the copy.

The paper is damp.

Black spots appear on both surfaces of paper.

A solid image or a relatively larger image has been copied continuously.

Set the paper thickness level to a thicker setting. For details about setting the paper thickness, see "Tray Paper Settings", Connecting the Machine/System Settings.

White stripes appear on the OHP transparency.

Fragments of paper are stuck to the OHP transparency.

Use a dry cloth to wipe any paper fragments off the back of the OHP transparency.

Parts of characters or images are missing sporadically.

Thin paper is set on the paper tray with its grain direction orthogonal to the paper feed direction.

Set thin paper with its grain direction parallel to the paper feed direction.

When translucent paper is used, scale-like white spots appear on the leading part of an image.

Translucent paper has taken on moisture and become wavy.

Cut translucent paper at least 1 m from its leading edge.

It is recommended to deliver the paper soon after cutting it as it easily absorbs moisture.

The back of paper is soiled.

Paper is not set correctly or combination of original and copy paper is not correct.

Load the paper correctly. For details about loading paper, see "Loading Paper", Paper Specifications and Adding Paper.

Thin lines or text written in pencil cannot be copied.

The color of the lines or text is similar to that of the background.

Adjust the copy image density and background density.

  • The edge of the copied paper may appear to be faintly soiled when being stacked on the tray.
