When You Cannot Send or Receive Fax Messages As Wanted

The modular cord may be disconnected.

Document appears blank at the other end.

The original was placed upside down.

  • When the original is placed directly on the exposure glass, the side to be scanned must face down.

  • When the original is inserted into the ADF, the side to be scanned must face up.

Printed or sent images are spotty.

The exposure glass, scanning glass, or guide plate of the ADF is dirty.

  • Clean them. For details about how to clean the machine, see "Maintaining Your Machine", Maintenance and Specifications.

  • Make sure ink or correction fluid is dry before placing originals.

Reception is possible, but transmission is impossible.

There are regions and telephone exchanges where a dial tone can not be detected.

Turn the dial tone detection off in User Parameters. For details about how to do this, see "Parameter Settings", Fax.

When using On Hook Dial or Manual Dial, a message appears and transmission is not allowed.

If the machine fails to detect the size of the original when the [Start] key is pressed, it performs a receiving operation.

  • If you use On Hook Dial or Manual Dial frequently, it is recommended that you set "Receive documents by pressing the [Start] key when originals are not set." to "Off" in User Parameters. If this is set to "Off", when using Manual Dial you cannot receive by pressing the [Start] key. For details about how to do this, see "Parameter Settings", Fax.

Cannot cancel a Memory Transmission.

The document is being scanned.

Press the [Clear/Stop] key. For details about canceling a transmission, see "Canceling a Transmission", Fax.

  • Load paper only as high as the upper limit markings on the side fences of the paper tray, or the markings on the paper guides of the bypass tray.

  • Fan the sheets thoroughly before loading them.

The paper tray's side fences are set too tightly.

Push the side fences lightly, and then reset them.

The paper is damp.

The paper is too thick or too thin.

Misfeeds occur frequently.

The paper is wrinkled or has been folded/creased.

  • Use paper that has been stored in the recommended temperature and humidity conditions. For details about the proper way to store paper, see "Paper Storage", Paper Specifications and Adding Paper.

Misfeeds occur frequently.

Printed paper is being used.

Do not load sheets that have already been copied or printed onto by another machine.

Black lines appear on the print produced at the destination.

The exposure glass, scanning glass, or guide plate of the ADF is dirty.

The machine is not on a level surface.

The machine must be placed on a stable and level surface. Check the machine environment and select an appropriate location. For details about the machine's environment, see "Where to Put Your Machine", Maintenance and Specifications.

The paper is creased, curled, or has blemishes.

Straighten the paper if curled. Replace it if wrinkled or damaged. For details about paper, see "Recommended Paper" and "Unusable Paper", Paper Specifications and Adding Paper.

The image is too dark or too light.

The correct paper type settings are not made.

Check the paper loaded on the paper tray or bypass tray matches the paper type set on the display panel. For details about paper type settings, see "Recommended Paper", Paper Specifications and Adding Paper.

The image is too dark or too light.

Using toner cartridges not recommended by the supplier may degrade the print quality or cause a malfunction.

Use only toner cartridges recommended by the supplier.

Background of received images appears dirty. Images from the back of the page appear.

When using moist, rough, or processed paper, areas of print may not be fully reproduced.

The image density has been set too low.

The original of the transmitted fax was printed on paper that is too thin.

Ask the sender to reprint the original on thicker paper, and then fax it again.

Received image is too light.

The toner is beginning to run out.

Replace the toner cartridge. For details about adding toner, see "Adding Toner", Maintenance and Specifications.

The image on the back side of duplex copies has mottled blank patches or is smudged.

Missing patches and smudges are caused by moisture leaking from the paper.

  • Do not install the machine in areas that are susceptible to low temperature.

  • Use paper that has been stored in the recommended temperature and humidity conditions. For details about the proper way to store paper, see "Paper Storage", Paper Specifications and Adding Paper.

  • Install the optional anti-humidity heater. For details about the anti-humidity heater, contact your service representative.

Other fax machine's name is not correctly printed or displayed.

When a destination is programmed in the Address Book using Web Image Monitor, in some languages, the programmed destination may not be printed or displayed correctly.
