Uneven Glossiness when Printing on Thick Paper

When duplex printing is performed on thick paper, uneven glossiness occurs in the area 204 mm (8.0 inches) from the leading edge of paper.

illustration of Uneven Gloss: Thick Paper

Cause:

The re-melting temperature of the toner on the first imaging surface differs between the first lap of the pressurizing roller (204 mm (8.0 inches)) and the rest, causing difference in glossiness between the area up to 204 mm (8.0 inches) from the leading edge and the remaining areas.

Occurrence conditions:

  • Printing is done at low temperature

  • Paper with a thickness equivalent to Paper Weight 8 or higher is used

  • Coated paper with a thickness equivalent to Paper Weight 5 or higher is used

  • A solid image is printed

Solution:

1In the [Machine: Productivity] group on the [Operator Adjust.] menu, select 0404: [Pressure Roller Cooling Fan Level], and then set the value in the following settings to [Strong].

  • 0404-01: [Pre-Feed]

  • 0404-02: [After-Feed]

  • 0404-03: [On Standby]

2Select 0403: [Fusing Temperature on Standby], and then set the value in the following settings to "50".

  • 0403-04: [Pressure Roller: On Standby]

  • 0403-05: [Pressure Roller: On Panel Off]

  • 0403-06: [Pressure Roller: On Low Power]

  • 0403-07: [Pressure Roller: Before Process]

3On the printer driver dialog box of Fiery Command WorkStation, set the fusibility throughput setting to Fuser Setting HQ mode.

4If the paper is not registered as custom paper, register the brand of the paper.

  • 1236-03: Fusing Pressure Roller Cooling: FCS/S: Fan Level: White

  • 1236-04: Fusing Pressure Roller Cooling: FCS/S: Fan Level: Metallic

6Select 1233: [Fusing Pressure Temperature], and then set the value in the following corresponding settings to "50".

  • 1233-01: Fusing Pressure Temperature: BW/FC/FCS: Pressure Roller Temp: BW/FC/FCS

  • 1233-02: Fusing Pressure Temperature: FCS/S: Pressure Roller Temp: Clear/Special

15Print 3 or more A3 sheets. Has the problem been resolved?

Yes

Go to the next step.

No

Start over from Step 14.

16Is the toner fusibility within the permissible range?

Note

  • The required level of fusibility is as follows

    • The printed image does not come off.

    • The toner does not come off even if it is lightly rubbed by a nail.

    • The toner does not come off even if it is rubbed by the cloth for cleaning the contact glass.

Yes

Finished!

No

No further improvement is likely.

Note

  • Select "Clear/Special" when using Neon Yellow, Neon Pink, or Invisible Red. Select "Metallic" when using Gold or Silver.

  • When printing on both sides of banner sheets, uneven glossiness is prone to occur because the temperature of the pressure roller tends to rise due to the long intervals between sheets. This may be resolved by printing on one side and then manually turning the paper over to print on the reverse side (manual duplex printing).

  • After performing the solution, it is recommended to perform the color calibration of the external controller.
